AC Repair Longmont, Colorado

GoodFellas Heating, Cooling & Electric - HVAC Problem or Electrical Problem

AC Repair in Longmont, CO

Longmont has a utility picture worth sorting out early, because it is not uniform across the city. Longmont Power & Communications is the municipal electric provider for much of town, while Xcel is widely present as well, most commonly for natural gas and for electricity at some addresses. Plenty of Longmont homes are Xcel customers.

This matters on a replacement rather than a repair. The Xcel cold climate heat pump rebate requires residential electric or natural gas service from Xcel Energy, and either account qualifies, so a home on municipal electric with Xcel gas is generally still eligible. Rather than guess from your address, we confirm what you actually have and tell you which programs apply before any numbers get discussed.

What a no-cool call in Longmont usually turns out to be

The housing stock here splits into two groups and they fail differently. Homes in and around the older grid near Main Street frequently have condensers installed in the 1990s or 2000s sitting on original ductwork that was never sized for air conditioning in the first place. Those systems tend to fail on airflow: a coil that ices over every July, a blower straining against undersized returns, a temperature split that never gets where it should. East of Highway 119, in the newer subdivisions, we see a different pattern. Builder-grade equipment from the 2000s reaching the end of its service life, usually announcing itself with a run capacitor that has drifted out of tolerance.

The order we work in

A diagnostic is not guesswork, it is a sequence of measurements. On arrival we confirm what the system is actually doing rather than working from the description, then check controls: thermostat operation, the call for cooling, low voltage at the equipment, and the condensate float switch. A backed-up drain line shutting the system off on purpose is a common and cheap answer, and we would rather find it in the first ten minutes than the last.

Electrical comes next. We measure the run capacitor in microfarads against its rating, inspect the contactor for pitting, and compare compressor and fan motor amp draw to the rated load amps on the data plate. A capacitor rated at 45 reading in the low 30s is failing today even though the system may still be cooling. Replacing it is inexpensive. Replacing the compressor it eventually takes out is not.

Then airflow and refrigerant together, because they mimic each other. We take the temperature split across the indoor coil and read superheat and subcooling against the manufacturer target for that day’s conditions. Those numbers separate a genuine undercharge from a restricted metering device from a compressor that is running electrically but no longer pumping. Pressures alone will not tell you which one you have.

Low on refrigerant means there is a leak

A sealed system does not consume refrigerant. If the charge is low, it went somewhere. We will find where before we add anything, because a recharge without a repair is an annual expense rather than a fix. On systems still running R-22, which we still see in older Longmont homes, this conversation gets expensive quickly. R-22 has not been produced or imported since 2020 and the reclaimed supply is priced accordingly. A capacitor on an R-22 system is worth replacing. A significant leak on one usually is not.

What it will cost, before we start

You get a firm number after the diagnosis and before any work begins. Capacitors and contactors sit at the low end. Fan motors and control boards are in the middle. Compressors and evaporator coils are the repairs that open a genuine replacement conversation, and on a system past twelve years old we will walk you through both numbers rather than only the one that suits us.

GoodFellas was a sunny spot in a day I thought was going to be awful! When Miguel showed up at my door, he was professional and cheerful and most importantly positive. He got right to work with the cable, he told me everything he was doing, he took pictures of what he found and gave me the price immediately. He also cleaned up everything!! I highly recommend GoodFellas!

These guys are great. I've been with them for years and never had any problems. They're very accommodating and worked me into their schedule quickly to get my air conditioning diagnosed and ultimately replaced (I'm excited to see how much better the new heat pump performs and saves money on my electric bill!). I appreciate their willingness to answer every question I ask (I can be a lot sometimes 😂). They're very knowledgeable and take pride in their work! Thanks Goodfellas!

I had a fantastic experience with Carlos, Isaac, and Ricky from Goodfellas! They came out to repair and clean my AC and knocked it out of the park. From start to finish, they were kind, respectful, and right on time — exactly what you hope for when letting people into your home. What really stood out was their honesty. They didn't try to upsell me or push services I didn't need. They assessed the situation, did the work, and that was that. It's rare to find technicians who genuinely make you feel taken care of rather than taken advantage of. Highly recommend Carlos, Isaac, and Ricky — and Goodfellas — to anyone looking for AC service done right. I'll absolutely be calling them again!

After my AC had major issues I could spend thousands on a repair or move to a new unit. I chose the new unit after Will provided the options and risks. Carlos and Ricky came out the very next day for the install. Ive been with this company for 11 years. Professional and very reassuring.
