Which utility serves you, and why it matters
Electric service around here comes from United Power for many addresses rather than Xcel, while natural gas usually still comes from Xcel. Homeowners often assume that means the Xcel rebate programs are off the table. Usually it does not.
The Xcel cold climate heat pump rebate requires residential electric or natural gas service from Xcel Energy in Colorado, and either account qualifies. If you have United Power for electricity and Xcel for gas, which is a very common setup in this area, you are generally eligible. Older homes
Retrofitted cooling on heating duct produces uneven results even when the equipment is healthy. Newer homes
Component wear on schedule. Capacitors first, then contactors and condenser fan motors, then evaporator coil leaks from formicary corrosion on coils built through the 2000s and early 2010s.
Dust is a real factor
Outdoor units on the eastern edge of the metro take in more field dust than units in denser suburbs. A loaded condenser coil raises head pressure until a safety opens, which presents as air conditioning that works part of the day. It is commonly mistaken for low refrigerant and treated with a recharge that solves nothing.
How we diagnose
Verify the complaint, check controls and the condensate float switch, measure the capacitor in microfarads against its rating and amp draw against rated load amps, evaluate airflow and take the temperature split, then read superheat and subcooling against the manufacturer’s target for the day. That last pair is what tells apart an undercharge, a restricted metering device and a compressor that is turning without pumping.
