AC Repair in Broomfield, CO
Broomfield grew fast, and most of what we service here was installed during that growth. Anthem, Interlocken and the surrounding subdivisions went in largely through the late 1990s and 2000s, which means a very large number of homes are now sitting on original equipment that is fifteen to twenty-five years old and reaching the end of a normal service life at roughly the same time.
What that means for your repair call
When equipment ages as a cohort, the failures arrive as a cohort too. What we are seeing across Broomfield right now, in rough order of frequency:
- Run capacitors out of tolerance. The cheapest repair in the trade and the one that protects the most expensive part.
- Condenser fan motors with failing bearings, announced by a screech on startup or a fan that will not spin while the compressor runs.
- Evaporator coil leaks. Coils manufactured through the 2000s and early 2010s across most brands developed formicary corrosion, which produces slow pinhole leaks. If your coil is still under a parts warranty, the part is often covered and you are paying labor and refrigerant.
- Contactors welded closed or pitted, which shows up as an outdoor unit that keeps running after the thermostat is satisfied.
- Compressors on the oldest of the cohort, which is where the repair-or-replace conversation becomes real.
Builder-grade equipment is not a defect, but it is a factor
Systems installed by production builders were specified to a price. That usually means single-stage equipment sized generously, matched with the least expensive coil that satisfied the rating, on duct that met code without much margin. None of that is wrong, and plenty of it has run reliably for two decades. It does mean that when a major component fails, the surrounding system is often at a similar point in its life, and replacing one expensive part inside an aging assembly is a decision worth making with real numbers in front of you.
How we diagnose, in order
Confirm the complaint. Check controls, including the condensate float switch, because a full drain pan shutting the system down on purpose is a frequent and inexpensive answer. Then electrical: capacitor microfarads against rating, contactor condition, amp draw against rated load amps. Then airflow: filter, blower, coil condition, temperature split. Then the refrigerant circuit: superheat and subcooling against the manufacturer target for the day’s conditions. That last step is what separates an undercharge from a metering device problem from a compressor that has stopped pumping, and there is no shortcut around it.
If it is low on refrigerant, there is a leak
Sealed systems do not consume refrigerant. We find the leak before adding anything. A recharge with no repair is a subscription.
The replacement conversation, handled honestly
Broomfield sits inside the DRCOG service area, which matters if the answer turns out to be replacement. A cold climate heat pump installed here currently qualifies for the Xcel per-ton rebate, the Power Ahead Colorado rebate and the Colorado state heat pump tax credit, and the stack is large enough that a heat pump can land below the price of a comparable air conditioner. That is unusual and it is temporary. We will price both, in writing, and we will tell you plainly when repairing what you have is the better call.
