What we actually check on a no-heat call
A furnace that will not fire is a sequence problem, and the sequence is diagnosable. We read the control board flash code, then verify the sequence step by step: thermostat call, inducer proving through the pressure switch, igniter resistance and glow, gas valve voltage and manifold pressure, flame rectification in microamps, limit and rollout switch continuity, and blower operation.
On any furnace pulled apart, we also run a combustion analysis and inspect the heat exchanger. Carbon monoxide is the one failure in this trade that is not negotiable, and a cracked heat exchanger is the reason we shut systems down rather than patch them.
The common failures, and what they feel like from the thermostat
- Failed igniter. The furnace tries, clicks, runs the inducer, then gives up and locks out. Silicon nitride and silicon carbide igniters are consumables and they fail on a schedule.
- Flame sensor coated in oxide. Burners light for a few seconds and then shut off, repeatedly. A microamp reading tells us instantly whether it is the sensor or the gas valve.
- Pressure switch or blocked flue. The inducer runs but burners never light. On the north metro’s many high-efficiency furnaces, a frozen or blocked PVC intake and exhaust termination is a frequent winter cause.
- Cracked heat exchanger. Flame rollout, soot, a smell during operation, or a positive CO reading in the supply air. This is a replace, not a repair.
- Failed inducer or blower motor. Silence when the thermostat calls, or airflow that never arrives.
- Control board. Intermittent lockouts and codes that do not match any single component.
- Condensate drain or trap frozen on a 90-plus furnace. A pressure switch reading a flooded trap will refuse to allow ignition. Common in unconditioned crawlspaces and garages during a cold snap.
Repair or replace
Furnaces in this area typically run 15 to 20 years. Past that, a major repair on an 80 percent unit is often worse value than a replacement, and the calculation has changed because of what is currently available in Colorado incentives on heat pumps and high-efficiency equipment. We will give you both numbers and let you decide rather than steering you.
Two things worth knowing before you decide. First, a heat pump can land below the cost of a like-for-like furnace and air conditioner replacement once Xcel rebates and the Colorado state credit are applied. Second, several of those programs have already closed or stepped down this year, so the number you were quoted in a previous season may no longer be the number.

Emergency and after-hours no heat
Colorado overnight lows drop fast, and a house without heat in January is a pipe-freeze problem before it is a comfort problem. If you have no heat, say so when you call. If you can safely do so before we arrive, keep cabinet doors under sinks open on exterior walls and leave a faucet dripping.
