What an honest AC repair call looks like
A technician arrives, listens to what the system is doing, and then measures it. That means static pressure across the air handler, temperature split across the evaporator coil, superheat and subcooling on the refrigerant circuit, amp draw on the compressor and condenser fan motor, and capacitor microfarads checked against the rating printed on the can.
Those numbers are the difference between a diagnosis and a guess. A system low on refrigerant and a system with a collapsed filter can produce the identical complaint from the homeowner. They do not produce the same readings.
You get the reading, the cause and the price before any repair begins. If the honest answer is that a compressor swap on a 19-year-old R-22 system is money poorly spent, we will say so, and we will not sell you a repair we do not believe in.
What actually fails on Front Range air conditioners
- Run capacitor. The single most common failure. The compressor hums but will not start, or the outdoor fan sits still. Inexpensive to replace, and frequently misdiagnosed by others as a dead compressor.
- Contactor. Burned or pitted contacts cause chattering at the outdoor unit, or a system that ignores the thermostat entirely.
- Low refrigerant charge. Refrigerant is not consumed. If the charge is low, there is a leak. Topping it off every summer without finding the leak is an expensive habit, so we locate it.
- Frozen evaporator coil. Ice on the copper line at the furnace means airflow or charge is wrong. Shut the system off, leave the fan running, and call. Running it iced can slug liquid refrigerant back to the compressor.
- Cottonwood packed into the condenser coil. A June ritual along the Front Range. A choked coil raises head pressure, kills capacity and shortens compressor life.
- Blower motor or ECM module. Weak airflow or none at all. The cost gap between a PSC motor and an ECM module is large, so we price the specific part before replacing anything.
- Blocked condensate drain. Water in the pan, a tripped float switch, and a system that shuts itself off. Cheap to clear, expensive to ignore.
Three symptoms that mean shut it off now
- Ice on the refrigerant line or the indoor coil. This is not the system working hard. Continuing to run it risks the compressor.
- A burning or hot-electrical smell. Kill power at the disconnect and the breaker, then call.
- A breaker that trips every time the outdoor unit starts. Resetting a breaker repeatedly on a hard-starting compressor is a fire risk, not a workaround.
What AC repair costs
We charge a diagnostic fee to come out and measure the system, and you are told that number when you book, not after the truck is in the driveway. Repairs are flat rate and quoted in writing before work starts, so there is no hourly meter running while a technician troubleshoots. If you already have a diagnosis and a quote from another company, bring it. We will look at it and tell you honestly whether it is fair.
Altitude changes how an air conditioner should be charged
Air at 5,300 feet is roughly 17 percent less dense than at sea level. A system charged off a standard sea-level chart runs incorrectly in Colorado, which shows up as poor cooling, icing, or a compressor that fails years early. Our technicians charge to measured superheat and subcooling rather than a printed target.
Front Range air is also very dry, so the indoor coil does far less moisture removal than it would in a humid climate. That changes what a healthy temperature split looks like. If a previous company told you the number had to be 20 degrees or the system was broken, they were applying a rule written for a different climate.
